Our tennis teams fared very well in the leagues during 2009. The boys 1st team was ahead in the first league and the 2nd team boys played good tennis all year round and won most of their matches. Every single one of the girls worked very hard at their ground strokes and match play and their tennis improved in leaps and bounds, the first team winning all their matches in the 4th term.
The tour to East London was a highlight. The boys managed to beat Selbourne Primary and lost by one game to Merrifield. The girls lost narrowly to Clarendon and played beautifully to beat Merrifield. As usual the tennis championships had closely fought finals. Martin Freschi beat Brad James in a hard hitting boy’s final and Shanna Wells beat Sara Pullen in a tense three setter! The house matches were won by Francis this year, in a slightly different format with the boys playing the boys and the girls playing the girls.
We greatly appreciate the invaluable tennis coaching that our own professional coach Andus Brewer gives to our school. He has really helped the players improve in all areas of their game this year and continues to give knowledge and expertise to all our coaches.

Tennis is booming at St George’s! There are two boys teams and two girls teams entered into the leagues. Our tennis squad boasts a record number of players in 2011.
The players have been extremely dedicated and this is evident in the quality tennis being played. They have entered various singles tournaments hosted by the Primary Schools Committee throughout the season. The results have been amazing, with all our entrants being placed amongst the top six in the different age groups.
We are very fortunate to still have our own professional tennis coach at the school. Andus Brewer coaches our squad players on Monday and Friday mornings. Our younger players receive their coaching in the afternoons. His wealth of knowledge and experience add great value to the tennis at our school.
All our players worked hard at their ground strokes and match play and their tennis improved in leaps and bounds. It has been such a joy watching some of the team players develop the confidence to play net shots.
I would like to thank all the dedicated teachers and parents for supporting us all year and I look forward to an action packed season next year!
2011 Tennis Tour
The girls and boys first tennis teams left St George’s Prep on Friday the 28th of October. Our first fixture was against Harvest Christian School. Both our teams played well and we managed to win all our matches.
We then enjoyed the drive to St Francis Bay, with much laughter and fun on the bus.
The Henderson family had kindly agreed to host us and we were thoroughly spoilt by them. We arrived at St Francis in the afternoon and as soon as we unloaded the baggage, we all lined up for a “cruise” along the canals. An early morning boat ride took some of the tennis players all the way up the Sand River on Saturday.
After a delicious breakfast on Saturday morning, we set off to play our matches against Jeffreys Bay Primary School, against a very experienced Grade 7 group. Our boys and girls played their first mixed doubles matches for the season. Our teams were not able to beat the strong Jeffreys Bay team, but managed to put up an outstanding fight, with both schools playing some excellent tennis.
We returned on Saturday afternoon, happy and very tired. What a wonderful weekend!
