The St George’s Prep Parents’ Association is made up of a group of volunteer parents and staff. The PA Committee meets once or twice a term to plan activities and is made up as follows:
The aim of the Parents’ Association is to arrange both social and fundraising activities for the parents and children of the Prep and Pre-Primary schools, to support school events and to provide information and support to parents.
The SGP Parents' Association makes a very valuable contribution to enriching the life of the school in many ways and the Headmaster is enormously grateful to all of the parents, friends and staff who give up their time to support the varied programme of events.
In its time the SGP Parents’ Association has raised many thousands of Rands, which have been spent on improving equipment and resources to enhance our children’s education and the facilities in school in general.
But it is much, much more than just fundraising. The SGP Parents’ Association’s main goal is to organise successful social events for parents and children; providing an opportunity for people to meet and get to know each other. The SGP Parents' Association exists to provide closer links between home and school, and it is an excellent way to bring staff, parents and friends together socially, in support of the school working towards a common goal.
We hope to see as many of you as possible at one or more of our events over the course of the year.
How We Raise Money
It is our priority is to have a strong social circle within our school community. We intend to do this by concentrating on our ongoing popular social functions and also introducing some new events throughout the year.
We still plan to raise funds for the school through some profit from such events to be able to provide our children with those little extras that make their time at St George’s Preparatory even more enjoyable. Some of our most popular events have been the bi-annual Food Fair, New Parents’ Braai, Music Trivia Evening, Family Camp Out, R5 Friday sales, Golf Day.
How we spend the money we raise
Once money is raised from events the funds are banked straight away. It is at our SGP Parents' Association Committee Meetings, that the decisions on how to spend the money are taken.
Usually, our Headmaster, Mr Liss, will have a ‘shopping list’ of items that the school would like to purchase to enhance the children’s learning experience at St George’s e.g. school play equipment or resources to improve a particular area of the curriculum or school environment.
SGP Parents’ Association funds are not generally spent on improving the fabric of the school building as this is the responsibility of the Governing Body. The money we raise is usually spent fairly quickly. That way, you can be sure that in supporting our school, your and everybody’s child will feel the benefit. Over recent years we have contributed towards the purchasing of a wide-range of sporting equipment, drinking water fountains, guillotines for staff use, fans for classrooms, fans for the hall, additional lighting for the school hall, text books, library books, teaching aids for the classrooms, equipment for the science laboratory and television sets for the Pre-Primary. Sometimes we have a big project under way that we have contributed to e.g. resurfacing of the tennis court, the upgrade of Grade 4 & 5 locker rooms and artificial grass under the climbing frame.
How Can You Get Involved?
All parents are automatically members of the St George’s Preparatory Parents' Association when they join our Prep and Pre-Primary schools. The Committee members put in a lot of hard work and enthusiasm into our events, ably assisted by teams of ‘willing helpers’. Parents can get involved if they want to, even if they only have a small amount of time available, and there are lots of ways you can help and support your child through the SGP Parents' Association.
You can offer to help before events or at other times during the year is so valuable – it really is a case of ‘many hands make light work’. It doesn’t matter if you can’t help on a regular basis, or even if you can’t come into school. There are always little jobs that can be done from home if you have half an hour to spare e.g. preparing raffle tickets. We always need assistance serving teas and selling items at the PA tuck shop at events; some of these events occur on Saturday mornings. We have an ongoing volunteers list; please let us know if you wish to be added.
You can help by letting us know if you have any contacts or skills we could use – anything is valuable to us. There is a post box for the SGP PA Committee in the secretary’s office, and if you would like any further information or are interested in joining the Committee or the volunteer list please contact by email stgppa@gmail.com
And finally, we are always extremely grateful to receive donations (these can be monetary donations or donations of gifts that can be used in lucky draws/raffles). Donations can be brought to school at any time during the year and placed in the PA Donation Box in the Marketing Office.
SGP PA events will be published on the website, in the termly calendars, via the School Communicator, displayed on the notice board and circulated by email.
