Learning Support focuses on assisting pupils who suffer from conditions that interfere with their learning abilities such as ADD, ADHD, and on language and reasoning disabilities such as dyslexia (difficulty in reading, writing, and spelling) and dyscalculia (math difficulties).

Children who have difficulty in their academic subjects need to be assisted to understand that they are intelligent beings who are valued. Pupils' strengths must be built up, along with their self-concept and individuality. Weaknesses are explained and addressed. Pupils who are underachieving are referred by their class teachers and concerned parents are involved in the process.

When learning problems go undetected, children develop feelings of hopelessness, and as they become more and more aware of their 'failure' and lack of achievement, they spiral downward and are eventually labeled as lazy or 'problem' children. Emotional problems that develop in children with learning difficulties can be more debilitating than the learning difficulty itself.

The Learning Support department has adopted a holistic approach to education and strives to support our pupils who experience barriers to learning at an individual level. Class teachers are an integral part of the process.  Each person contributes knowledge from a different area of expertise.  As a collaborative effort an appropriate plan for that learner’s specific learning needs is devised. The plan immediately goes into action, the child is closely monitored and the plan is revisited weekly to make any required modifications.
